Dr. Richard Dean, DVM, is the proud owner of Urgent Paws, a forthcoming veterinary practice set to open its doors this spring. A dedicated resident of Middletown since the age of 5, Dr. Dean has deep roots in the community and a commitment to providing compassionate veterinary care.
His educational journey began at St. Mary’s Elementary School, followed by high school at Red Bank Catholic, where he graduated in 2010. Engaging in various sports during high school, including football, baseball, soccer, and swimming, Dr. Dean imbibed values of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance that continue to shape his approach to veterinary medicine.
Venturing beyond Middletown, Dr. Dean pursued a degree in biology with a minor in biochemistry at The University of Scranton, graduating cum laude in 2014. This period deepened his understanding of biological sciences and fueled his passion for exploring the intricate workings of life at a cellular level. Eager to translate his academic insights into hands-on care for animals, he pursued veterinary studies at The University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 2018.
Dr. Dean’s journey into the veterinary industry began in 2012 as a veterinary technician during his college years. Fueled by a deep-rooted passion for animals and a desire to make a positive impact on their well-being, he envisioned opening his own practice once becoming a doctor. His favorite aspect of working with animals is the profound sense of fulfillment derived from improving their health, whether through medical treatments, ensuring comfort, or offering reassurance during vulnerable moments.
The defining moment in Dr. Dean’s career occurred during his first summer break in college when he volunteered at a veterinary hospital. Captivated by the unique challenges and rewards of working with animals, he pivoted from pre-med to pursue a career in veterinary medicine—a decision that affirmed his passion and commitment.
As a veterinarian with a focus on urgent care, Dr. Dean is dedicated to making a timely difference in the lives of pets and their families, especially in critical moments. His professional interests align with the critical nature of urgent care cases, emphasizing swift, skilled, and compassionate intervention. Driven by a commitment to excellence, he stays at the forefront of veterinary advancements through memberships in professional associations, including the AVMA.
Beyond his veterinary work, Dr. Dean finds joy in his family life. Married to his high school sweetheart since 2018, he and his wife are raising two wonderful kids and sharing their home with their cat, Jasmine. Their love for travel, exploration, and outdoor activities strengthens their bonds and adds vibrancy to their lives. Dr. Dean envisions Urgent Paws as a family-run hospital, reflecting the warmth, care, and commitment that define his personal and professional life.
